Our Training

We train our staff to ensure that they are up to date with all Skills for Care training guidelines and additional training deemed necessary by Penrose Care management to ensure we have the best trained staff in England’s social care sector. Below you will find details of our training program.
Excellence in Domiciliary Care Training Programme
Penrose Care’s home care support workers are put through our Excellence in Domiciliary Care Training Programme which spans c 12 days, including course work and practical training. We believe our training program is among the best in England. Following completion of our training program, staff are supported to pursue specialist training, the Level 2 or 3 Diploma in Health and Social Care, and conduct ongoing Continuing Professional Development.
Excellence in Domiciliary Care Part I
The first part of our training programme is seven days minimum in length and covers the knowledge and skillsets required and recommended by Skills for Care.
Duration: c. 7 days
Welcome & Support Worker’s Responsibilities: Penrose Care
Provides a welcome to Penrose Care, an overview of our organisation and values, and covers eight standards:
  • Role of the health and social care worker
  • Personal development
  • Communicate effectively
  • Equality and Inclusion
  • Principles of safeguarding in health and social care
  • Person-centred support
  • Principles of implementing duty of care
  • Health and safety in an adult social care setting.
Duration: c. 3.5 hours.
Qualification: CIS Certificate of Successful Completion (however, additional relevant courses must first be completed prior to the candidate qualifying for this certificate)
Equality & Diversity: Skills for Health
This course provides broad based-knowledge of Equality & Diversity covering 1) General awareness, 2) Age, 3) Disability, 4) Gender and gender reassignment, 5) Race & enthnicity, 6) Religion & belief, 7) Sexual orientation, and 8) Pregnancy and maternity.
Duration: c. 2.5 hours with eight modules each with multiple-choice exam.
Qualification: Certificate of Completion in Equality & Diversity, Skills for Health. Valid for one year.
First Aid at Work, Emergency: British Red Cross
Covers the role of the first aider, communicating with a casualty, contents of first aid kits, recording of incidents and accidents, assessing the situation and circumstances in order to act safely, promptly and effectively in an emergency, and administer first aid to a casualty who is unconscious, requires CPR, is choking, is wounded or bleeding, is in shock, and/or has minor conditions.
Duration: c. 7 hours with assessment.
Qualification: HSE approved Emergency first aid at work (EFAW) certificate, British Red Cross. Valid for 3 years. Skills refresher required every 12 months.
Fire Safety Awareness: Skills for Health
National Association of Hospital Fire Officers (NAHFO)-endorsed course on fire safety covering 1) the nature and causes of fire, 2) fire prevention, 3) fire related signs, 4) raising the alarm, and 5) fire equipment.
Duration: c. 1 hr 15 min with five modules each with multiple-choice exam.
Qualification: Certificate of Completion in Fire Safety Awareness, Skills for Health. Valid for one year.
Food, Nutrition, and Hydration in Health & Social Care: Skills for Health
Originally commissioned by the Department of Health (DH) and meeting the Essence of Care benchmark for Food & Nutrition, the course covers: 1) Introduction to food, nutrition and hydration, 2) Undernutrition and dehydration, 3) Facilitating and supporting eating and drinking, 4) Assistance to eating and drinking, 5) Best practice for nutritional care, 6) Basics of nutrition and hydration.
Duration: c. 2 hours including multiple-choice exam.
Qualification: Certificate of Completion in Food, Nutrition and Hydration, Skills for Health. Valid for one year.
Health & Safety: Skills for Health
Originally commissioned by the Department of Health (DH) and endorsed by the Health & Safety Executive (HSE), the course covers 1) Why we have health and safety, 2) risk management, and 3) incident reporting.
Duration: c. 1 hour including multiple-choice exam.
Qualification: Certificate of Completion in Health & Safety Awareness, Skills for Health. Valid for one year.
Infection Prevention, Principles of: Skills for Health
This course detals with the principles involved in preventing healthcare associated infections. The course assessment is based on NHS role-based scenario and how you should apply your principles of infection control knowledge in practice.
Duration: c. 1.5 hours with four modules each with scenario-based assessments.
Qualification: Certificate of Completion in Principles of Infection Prevention, Skills for Health. Valid for one year.
Moving & Handling of People, SSTAR Training
Manual Handling of People/Patients training programme has been designed to comply with Manual Handling Regulations, which requires all staff involved in the handling and moving of people/patients/clients to be trained in accordance with the current best practice. It covers the following topics: regulations, anatomy and physiology of the spine, safe handling practice, risk assessment, control measures. The course has its main focus on the practice of techniques and the use of handling equipment specific to the candidates care setting, including Helping to Stand, Moving in bed and Using a hoist, as well as smaller pieces of equipment as available.
Duration: c. 6-7 hours with assessment.

Safeguarding of Vulnerable Adults (SOVA), Social Care Institute of Excellence
This SOVA (formerly POVA) training course is aimed at raising awareness of the importance of Safeguarding Vulnerable People including elderly. Staff completing this course will be in a better position to implement their company adult protection policy and the procedures they should follow.
Duration: c. 7 hours with assessment.

Medicines – Domiciliary Care, Care of: Boots Care Services
This care of medicines course is designed to help staff in a Domiciliary Care environment work towards a vocational qualification on the Qualifications and Credit Framework..
Duration: c. 3-7 hours assessed by multiple-choice exam.

Personalised Care Planning: Skills for Health
Developed and endorsed by NHS Employers and the Department of Health (DH) Policy Lead for Long Term Conditions, the course covers 1) An introduction to personalised care planning, 2) understanding how personalised care planning works, 3) skills and behaviors for effective personalised care planning, and 4) case studies.
Duration: c 2.3 hours including multiple-choice exam
Qualification: Certificate of Completion in Personalised Care Planning, Skills for Health. Valid for one year.
Basic Health Care Assistant Training Part 1, Classroom: Citygate Training Centre
This course covers 1) Skills for Care Common Induction Standards, 2) Moving and Handling, 3) Washing and Bathing, 4) First Aid Awareness, and 5) Infection Control. The course is followed by a 5-day (35 hour) placement at a highly regarding care home in north London.
Duration: c. 7 hours.
Qualification: Health Care Assistant Certificate, City Gate Training Centre
Following the successful completion of Part I of our Excellence in Domiciliary Care Training Programme, support workers that already have at least six months experience in carrying out personal care services within three years of joining Penrose Care may be dispatched to provide services if the support worker is determined to be excellent in his/her competence in personal care by the management of Penrose Care. Persons with less than six months experience must move onto Part II of the induction program.
Excellence in Domiciliary Care Part II: Personal Care
The second part of our domiciliary care training program is the 2nd part of Citygate Training Centre’s Basic Health Care Assistant Training which consist of a 5-day (35 hour) placement at a highly regarded care home in north London.
Duration: Five days (35 hours)

After completing Penrose Care’s Excellence in Domiciliary Care Training Programme, staff are then supported in achieving training in specialist areas of care including but not limited to:

Food Safety: Lakefield
Holders of this qualification will have knowledge and understanding of the importance of food hygiene, associated food hazards, good hygiene practice and controls based upon an awareness of food safety management systems. Holders will know how to maintain good practice in the handling, processing and preparation of safe food.
Duration: One day minimum assessed by multiple choice exam
Qualification: QCF Level 2 Award in Food Safety in Catering, RSPH / Lakefield
Nutrition, Understanding: Lakefield
This course goes over and above a standard food nutrition course, providing understanding of nutrition in the professional kitchen.
Duration: One day minimum assessed by exam.
Qualification: Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Nutrition in Commercial Kitchens, City & Guilds / Unilever Food Solutions / Lakefield
Health & Safety: Lakefield
Holders of this qualification will understand the general principles of health and safety in the workplace, the nature of hazards and risks in the workplace and their possible effects, and hazards and risks likely to affect the occupational health of individuals.
Duration: One day minimum assessed by multiple-choice exam
Qualification: QCF Level 2 Award in Safety in the Work Place
Royal Society for Public Health / Lakefield
Keeping Kosher, Introduction to: Rabbi Chaim Weiner, Director, European Bet Din, Masorti Judaism
This course covers 1) main principles, 2) other rules, and 3) the practice of Keeping Kosher.
Duration: c 2 hours.
Qualification: Certificate of Attendance, Penrose Care. Course taught by Rabbi Chaim Weiner.
Those working for families utilising our childcare agency service will be supported in achieving the following qualifications:
Child Protection Awareness in Health: Skills for Health
The course covers 1) Child development, 2) understanding the basics, 3) recognising child abuse, 4) reporting child abuse, and 5) working together. The course was written by the NSPCC in partnership with EduCare who are independetly certified as conforming to unviersally accepted Continuous Professional Development (CPD) guidelines and hold the BSI quality mark.
Duration: c. 1 hour including multiple-choice exam
Qualification: Certificate of Completion in Child Protection in Health, Skills for Health. Valid for one year.
Common Core Skills and Knowledge for child carers: MNT Training
The course covers six common core skills for childcare practitioners needing to register with Ofsted.
Duration: c. 7 hours.
Qualification: Level 3 Certificate in Common Core Skills, OCN / MNT Training
First aid for child carers: British Red Cross
The course covers: Accidents – how and what type occur, Unconscious casualty – adult, child and infant; CPR – adult, child and infant; Contents of the first aid kit, Dealing with blood loss and shock, Burns and scalds, Causes of unconsciousness and anaphylaxis, Electric shock, Foreign objects, Recognition and management of fractures, Administration of medication, Recognition of infectious diseases and minor illnesses, and Recording and reporting – NCMA/PLA and HSE

Health & Social Care Diplomas
After completing Penrose Care’s Excellence in Domiciliary Care Training Programme, staff are then supported in achieving one of the standard health and social care diplomas. In addition, staff are supported in conducting Continuing Professional Development throughout their careers with Penrose Care.
QCF Level 2 Diploma in Health & Social Care: Apple Training Academy
The diploma covers: Introduction to Communication, Introduction to Personal Development, Introduction to Equality and Inclusion, Introduction to Duty of Care, Principles of Safeguarding and Protection, The Role of the Health & Social Care Worker, Implementing Person-Centred Approaches, Contribute to Health & Safety and Handling Information.
Duration: c. 5-6 months.
